VP, Commercial Insurance Manager

We are looking for a strategic and dynamic leader to partner with branch and distribution management to grow the White Plains/Albany region middle market book of business.  This position will report to the New York Region Commercial Manager.

This position is based in White Plains, New York.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for the profit, growth and fostering of internal and external relationships made up of $140 million book of P&C premium and 7 team members. Directly accountable for the middle market P&C branch underwriting operation and results, including driving new business production premium/account retention and rate efforts for all Commercial P&C Insurance lines of business.  The job territory is the White Plains to Albany NY region and Vermont.

This Commercial Insurance Manager is responsible for hiring, retention, performance management, compensation, technical training, coaching and development for multi-line underwriting staff.  The Manager is also responsible for advancing the sales and marketing expertise of the local Commercial Insurance team.  

Specific responsibilities include:

P&L - Accountability (premium, profitability, growth, retention, and expense plans/results) for middle market P&C business. KPI – Accountability for submissions, quotes, binds for each team member, and assigned territory. Portfolio Management/LOB - Direct profit and loss responsibility for field (lower-middle market) business; coordination, agency management, and production responsibility across the Commercial Insurance product portfolio. Underwriting Strategy Execution - Manages execution of new middle market underwriting and renewal underwriting strategy for assigned branch(es) Technical UW/Referral Resource - In collaboration with product line and industry practice, serves as technical resource for referrals and underwriting authority. Point of contact for branch risks which fall outside of field authority; coordinate efforts with Home Office/Product and Segment Leaders. Audit and Quality Assurance – Responsible for driving the self-audit process for the New Jersey retail underwriting team.  It is also the primary responsibility for this manager to produce satisfactory and passing corporate underwriting audit scores. Marketplace Focus - Develop opportunities particular to the marketplace and provide customized approaches on market conditions and agency needs.  Marketing Strategy and Execution - Works closely with Field Operations on development and execution of marketing strategy and coordinates marketing and production activities within the New Jersey branch territory for the entire portfolio of Commercial Insurance business. Business Development - Directs business development activities and provides guidance for implementing sales and/or product launches. Producer Management: -Primary responsibility for managing regional/local producer plant; responsible for cohesive and consistent agency management strategies across assigned locations. Facilitates product education/appetite; serves as point person for key local producer relationships. Budget and Expense Administration - Oversees business and budget planning for all business produced within the White Plains/Albany branch. Ensures effective expense administration for assigned locations. Staff Development and Staff Administration (including Performance Management and Compensation) – Accountable for new hire onboarding, training, and developing, succession planning, culture of inclusion, coaching and mentoring and retention of staff.  Ensure effective deployment of staff for assigned locations; maintain mentoring / succession relationship with several high potential Senior Underwriters, Specialists, Sr Specialists, Executive Specialists within assigned locations. Oversee workflows, staffing resources, and appropriate application of technology to ensure efficient, cost-effective field operation.  Collaborate with HR on performance management and compensation process. 

Qualifications

Ten+ years Multi-line underwriting experience with a strong understanding of P&C lines of business, industry practices, products and appetiteStrong technical multi line underwriting skills, preferably high level of underwriting authority and strong credibility with CI WHS Industry practice and line of businessStrong leadership skills to manage a team of multiline commercial underwritersStrong understanding of field distribution plant (broker, regional, independent agents)Strong people management skillsStrong focus on KPI management with accountabilityAdvanced marketing and sales skillsBuilds strategic relationshipsDrives customer focusDemonstrates agilityDrives executionExerts operational decision makingExhibits skillful communication

The pay range for the role is $167,900 to $225,000. The specific offer will depend on an applicant’s skills and other factors.
