Director, Electrical Engineering

Business Area:

Global Engineering and Real Estate (GERE) works closely with the Operations, R&D and Commercial functions within AstraZeneca to deliver major capital investments for the company (typically over $10million). The capital expansion program involves the engineering, construction and qualification of both new and growing assets. In addition to the asset provision activities, Global Engineering supports the Business by providing technical support to sites and other global functions. Global Engineering is made up of a mixture of Project Managers, Project Control Specialists, Project Technical Managers and Subject Matter Experts. These positions fit into project teams and work directly with third party design and construction partners to deliver facilities that meet AstraZeneca’s requirements for safety, quality, time and cost.

This exciting role within Global Engineering, will be responsible for setting the technical direction for Control and Electrical Engineering for AstraZeneca and  leading a team of Control & Electrical Engineers to support the delivery of our capital project portfolio.

Key to this role is effective stakeholder engagement with global teams and willing to be flexible and travel to support a global portfolio.  

Responsibilities:

Provides technical leadership for Control and Electrical Engineering of pharmaceutical related engineering technology, and establishes appropriate technology processes and standards, aligned to business objectives.

Leads, manages, coaching and motivates a team of Control & Electrical Engineers providing resource to support the three pillars of GERE’s value proposition of Strategic Advice, Project Execution and Enhancing Business Operations.

You will be responsible for providing technical leadership of the Control and Electrical Team including resource allocation and provision,  development of the team and all the associated line management accountabilities including the rewarding performance process.

As a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in electrical engineering, your technical knowledge and experience will enable you to prioritize your efforts into areas of high risk, to support your team, and to quickly resolve any issues which may arise.

Stakeholder engagement and management is key to the success of this position.

You'll work closely with Project Managers and Project Technical Managers to ensure that the Control and Electrical technical resources and scope of any projects are aligned with both business and project needs.

You'll provide engineering technical support for AstraZeneca due diligence projects, ensuring that standards, processes and validations are all appropriate and that technical learnings are captured and disseminated post project completion.

You'll be involved in overseeing activities on a global portfolio of projects concurrently and will need to effectively communicate with stakeholders to ensure efficient technical solutions are provided.

Essential requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and 10 years of overall engineering experience with a demonstrated ability (5 years min) in the Pharmaceutical Industry or similar.

A proven track record of leading technical teams in a capital project environment and experience in pharmaceutical related engineering technologies with the technical expertise and ability to make connections between technology and delivering business value

Ability to priorities and understand the impact of decisions made

Strong communication, influencing and relationship building skills with senior AZ customers, peers and third party suppliers.

Excellent communicator (written and verbal) in English.

Ability to develop and champion innovation opportunities and lead any changes

Experience of managing/delivering the engineering technology aspects of projects / technology developments

Working understanding of relevant industry codes and standards, such as process and machinery functional safety systems, and hazardous (classified) areas

Self-motivated and able to work on own initiative

Flexible and with the ability to work under pressure at times.

Desirable requirements:

Post-graduate Engineering qualification

Ability to work in diverse multinational teams and proven ability to influence others to achieve positive outcomes

Good commercial awareness and understanding of global engineering technology innovations in the external market (political/economic and new trends)

Knowledge of industries outside pharmaceuticals

Knowledge of Lean design processes and their application

Experience of managing and developing people
